MEDIA ADVISORY: Ceremonial Opening of the Renovated Florida Senate Chamber

Former Senate President Andy Gardiner to Host Open House in Renovated Florida Senate Chamber

Tallahassee —

Former Senate President Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando) will host a ceremonial opening of the newly renovated Florida Senate Chamber on November 21, 2016, at 3:00 p.m.

The 1978 Senate Chamber underwent a historic renovation following the adjournment of the 2016 Legislative Session. Prior to the renovation, only minimal updates, including those necessary to accommodate changes in technology, had been made since the original construction.

“In my view, we are guests in this building and we have an important responsibility to adequately preserve and maintain areas of the Capitol complex designated for use by the Senate, but also often utilized by students and other civic groups when the Senate is not in Session,” said President Gardiner. “We believe the historic components of the remodel have created a timeless design that will limit the need for future renovations.”

During the 2016 Legislative Session, President Gardiner appointed several Senators to a Chamber Renovation Working Group to assist in making specific decisions regarding aesthetic and historical elements of the renovation. The working group was led by President Pro Tempore Richter and included Senators Benacquisto, Braynon, Montford, Lee, and Stargel.

“Talented artisans and craftsmen have worked tirelessly to ensure the Senate Chamber is ready for use for the Senate’s Organization Session on Tuesday, November 22,” continued President Gardiner. “We look forward to welcoming past and current Senators and their families, our Senate staff, as well as members of the public to tour the new Florida Senate Chamber and to meet the dedicated team of professionals who helped us create this work of art.”

Representatives from All State Construction of Tallahassee, which served as the Senate’s construction manager for the project, as well as the architect and engineers from Hicks Nation architectural firm, also of Tallahassee, will be on site during the open house to answer questions about the project.
