Senator Book to Present $500,000 Appropriation to Combat Maternal Opioid Addiction

Check Presented to Memorial Regional Hospital for Maternal Addiction Treatment Program

Broward —

State Senator Lauren Book will be presenting a $500,000 check to Memorial Regional Hospital tomorrow for its maternal addiction treatment program.

This funding will help combat South Florida’s tragic and costly opioid epidemic, allowing Memorial to conduct outreach, substance abuse screening, and treatment for pregnant women, as well as provide aftercare for 9 months after delivery.

“Fueled by the opioid epidemic, Broward County hospitals have seen around 600 babies born in withdrawal from drug exposure in-utero each year,” said Sen. Book – a new mom herself, and a champion for accessible addiction treatment and mental health care. “I’ve seen it firsthand…I know this is a tough battle that cannot be won alone. These funds will allow Memorial to provide life-saving support for pregnant women caught in the throws of addiction, and their babies.”

In 2015, Broward saw healthcare costs of $86.4 million associated with the birth of 600 babies in drug withdrawal with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). This same year, Memorial incepted the material addiction treatment program with the goal of reducing NAS rates in Broward by treating opioid addiction during pregnancy. To date, the award-winning program has saved $6.8 million by detoxifying pregnant women and enabling the healthy births of 47 infants.

The average cost of a normal, healthy newborn birth is $8,800; the average cost of a newborn born with NAS is $163,000.

The check will be presented tomorrow, Wednesday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m., during the hospital’s commission meeting at the Memorial Regional Hospital Corporate Offices at 3111 Stirling Road in Hollywood.
