Senator Debbie Mayfield Files Consumer Protection Legislation

Tallahassee, FL —

Senator Debbie Mayfield (Melbourne – R) has filed Senate Bill (SB) 1180, titled Consumer Protection from Changes to Prescription Drug Formularies, which requires health plans to deliver on the prescription coverage benefits that they market and sell. This legislation will ensure that the benefits Florida families sign up for during open enrollment are the benefits they actually receive.

Florida families who are covered through Medicare are protected from these bait-and-switch tactics. This bill will provide the same protections to Floridians who have commercial health plan coverage from midyear benefit changes.

Senator Debbie Mayfield said, “Many Florida families carefully choose a health plan that covers the medications they need at a price they can afford, but unfortunately, insurers can pull a bait-and-switch by altering prescription benefits at any time during the policy year. This bill will ensure that Floridians have access to the benefits that were marketed and sold to them for the year.
