  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution encouraging fathers and caring men

  3         who substitute for fathers to be meaningfully

  4         involved in their children's lives, and

  5         recognizing September 2003 as "Take Your Dad to

  6         School Month" in the State of Florida.

  7  

  8         WHEREAS, in 1998, the United States Department of

  9  Education published a report entitled "Fathers' Involvement in

10  Their Children's Schools," showing that children whose fathers

11  participate in their school's activities are more likely to

12  achieve high grades, enjoy school, and participate in

13  extracurricular activities, and less likely to repeat a grade

14  or be suspended or expelled from school, and

15         WHEREAS, a 1999 survey commissioned by the National

16  Center for Fathering found that 40.2 percent of fathers never

17  read to their children, only 40.9 percent of fathers 25 to 44

18  years of age know any of their children's teachers, 32.4

19  percent of fathers had never attended their children's school

20  events, 77 percent of fathers had never shared school lunch

21  with their children, and 58 percent of fathers had never

22  volunteered at their children's school, and

23         WHEREAS, fathers are increasingly being encouraged by

24  all responsible segments of society to be meaningfully

25  involved in every aspect of their children's lives because

26  children who are benefited by a wholesome and active

27  relationship with their fathers are more likely to be

28  well-adjusted in adolescence and adulthood, and

29         WHEREAS, men who are grandparents, uncles, family

30  friends, or Big Brothers in the community are increasingly

31  involved in the lives of children whose biological fathers are

 1  absent, recognizing that children who are without fathers

 2  benefit from having a wholesome and active relationship with a

 3  caring man who substitutes as a nurturing father, NOW,

 4  THEREFORE,

 5  

 6  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 7  

 8         That the Florida Senate encourages fathers and caring

 9  men who substitute for fathers to be meaningfully involved in

10  every aspect of their children's lives and recognizes

11  September 2003 as "Take Your Dad to School Month" in the State

12  of Florida.
