  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing March 29, 2005, as

  3         F.S.U. Day.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State

  6  University is the oldest continuous site of higher education

  7  in Florida, and holds the state's first chapter of Phi Beta

  8  Kappa, and

  9         WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University joined

10  an elite group of the nation's top research universities,

11  being designated as a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie

12  Foundation, and

13         WHEREAS, today, Florida State University offers

14  graduate and undergraduate degrees in 573 fields within 17

15  independent colleges and schools, and Florida State

16  University's comprehensive offerings prepare students for

17  graduate school, professional degree programs, and successful

18  careers, and

19         WHEREAS, Florida State University received a

20  reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Southern Association

21  of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, primarily

22  through the creation of a Quality Enhancement Plan focusing on

23  student-leadership development both in and out of the

24  classroom, and

25         WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of

26  Medicine, serving the state's rural, geriatric, and other

27  medically underserved populations, received full accreditation

28  from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, becoming the

29  first new allopathic medical school established in the United

30  States in more than 20 years, and

 1         WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the

 2  lives of Florida State University students due to the

 3  long-standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and

 4  cultural diversity on its campus along with the aggressive

 5  recruitment of diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the Senate hereby recognizes March 29, 2005, as

10  F.S.U. Day in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida State

11  University's contributions as an outstanding institution of

12  higher education.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

14  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. T.K.

15  Wetherell, President of Florida State University, as a

16  tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
