House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 7, 2007, as "Hillsboro
3Inlet Lighthouse Centennial Day."

5     WHEREAS, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has played a
6significant economic and historical role in the settlement and
7development of South Florida and its counties for 100 years, and
8     WHEREAS, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has stood through
9fierce hurricanes, protecting coastal shipping and guiding
10mariners past dangerous reefs before the advent of SONAR, LORAN,
11and GPS technologies, and
12     WHEREAS, the lighthouse is a tourist attraction where
13thousands of curious visitors, divers, fishermen, and yachtsmen
14come to photograph and explore the inlet, ocean, and reefs each
15year, and
16     WHEREAS, the lantern of the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse,
17known as the "Big Diamond," was first lit by the United States
18Lighthouse Establishment on March 7, 1907, and shines farther
19out to sea than any other lighthouse lantern in the world
20through its 9-foot Fresnel lens, and
21     WHEREAS, by being chosen to represent the 30 existing
22lighthouses of Florida on the 37-cent postage stamp produced in
232003, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse was recognized as a symbol
24of the romantic spirit and sense of adventure characteristic of
25many Floridians, and
26     WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the state to
27preserve, protect, and promote this 100-year-old treasure of our
28seashore, the historic Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, NOW,
29THEREFORE,

31Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
32Florida:

34     That the House of Representatives designates March 7, 2007,
35as "Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Centennial Day".
