       By Senator Garcia

       40-01750-09                                           20091630__
    1 A bill to be entitled
    2 An act relating to historic properties; amending s.
    3         267.061, F.S.; declaring a state policy of assistance
    4 to community organizations in their efforts to
    5 preserve historic resources; providing an effective
    6         date.
    7
    8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
    9
   10 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of section
   11 267.061, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
   12 267.061 Historic properties; state policy,
   13  responsibilities.—
   14 (1) STATE POLICY RELATIVE TO HISTORIC PROPERTIES.—
   15 (a) The rich and unique heritage of historic properties in
   16 this state, representing more than 10,000 years of human
   17 presence, is an important legacy to be valued and conserved for
   18 present and future generations. The destruction of these
   19 nonrenewable historical resources will engender a significant
   20 loss to the state’s quality of life, economy, and cultural
   21 environment. It is therefore declared to be state policy to:
   22 1. Provide leadership in the preservation of the state’s
   23  historic resources;
   24         2. Administer state-owned or state-controlled historic
   25  resources in a spirit of stewardship and trusteeship;
   26 3. Contribute to the preservation of non-state-owned
   27 historic resources and to give encouragement to organizations
   28  and individuals undertaking preservation by private means;
   29 4. Foster conditions, using measures that include financial
   30 and technical assistance, for a harmonious coexistence of
   31  society and state historic resources;
   32 5. Encourage the public and private preservation and
   33 utilization of elements of the state’s historically built
   34  environment; and
   35 6. Assist local governments to expand and accelerate their
   36 historic preservation programs and activities; and.
   37 7. Assist community organizations in their efforts to
   38  preserve historical resources.
   39 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
