    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing October 2010 as “Breast
    3         Cancer Awareness Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed
    6  cancer, excluding skin cancer, in women and ranks second among
    7  cancer deaths in women in the United States, and
    8         WHEREAS, Florida ranks second in the nation in the number
    9  of breast cancer deaths and fourth in the nation in the number
   10  of new breast cancer cases, and
   11         WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer, with
   12  breast cancers predominantly occurring in women age 50 and older
   13  and the risk increasing with age until age 80, and
   14         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more
   15  than 12,650 new cases of invasive breast cancer in Florida were
   16  diagnosed, and more than 2,700 women died of the disease during
   17  the year 2009, and
   18         WHEREAS, a woman living in Florida has a one-in-eight
   19  chance of developing breast cancer, and
   20         WHEREAS, in the United States, breast cancer is the second
   21  most common cause of cancer death in white, African American,
   22  Asian American, and American Indian women, and the first most
   23  common cause among Hispanic women, and
   24         WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical exams
   25  and mammography screening beginning at age 40 in compliance with
   26  the American Cancer Society recommended guidelines, is the key
   27  to detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages, and
   28         WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer when
   29  the disease is found in its earliest stages is about 98 percent,
   30  but the survival rate drops to about 27 percent if the cancer is
   31  detected late, in a stage of metastases, and
   32         WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of October as
   33  “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” breast cancer awareness
   34  programs, such as the American Cancer Society’s Reach to
   35  Recovery program, will promote early breast cancer detection
   36  through regular screening and, NOW, THEREFORE,

   40         That October 2010 is recognized as “Breast Cancer Awareness
   41  Month” in Florida.
