Florida Senate - 2011 SB 778 By Senator Diaz de la Portilla 36-00794-11 2011778__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to district school board membership; 3 creating s. 1001.3615, F.S.; requiring that district 4 school boards consist of nine members in counties 5 where the population exceeds a certain number; 6 providing for single-member and at-large districts; 7 providing for the election of a chair and vice chair 8 of the school board; providing an effective date. 9 10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 11 12 Section 1. Section 1001.3615, Florida Statutes, is created 13 to read: 14 1001.3615 Election of district school board members in 15 counties in which the population exceeds 2 million.— 16 (1) Notwithstanding any other provision of this part, in a 17 county in which the population exceeds 2 million people, the 18 district school board shall consist of nine members. The school 19 district shall be divided into seven single-member residence 20 areas from each of which a school board member residing in the 21 residence area shall be elected by the electors residing in that 22 residence area only. Two school board members shall reside in 23 and be elected from the district at large. The district school 24 board member residence areas shall cover the entire district and 25 be as nearly equal in population as practicable, according to 26 the most recent decennial census. 27 (2) The school board members elected at large shall serve 28 as the chair and vice chair of the school board, and the ballot 29 shall be styled in such a manner as to provide for that choice. 30 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2011.
