| 5 | WHEREAS, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the |
| 6 | United States, striking over 700,000 Americans each year and |
| 7 | killing more than 133,750, including 8,524 Floridians, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, stroke is also a leading cause of serious long- |
| 9 | term disability in the United States, with more than 1.1 million |
| 10 | adults experiencing functional limitations or difficulty with |
| 11 | activities of daily living resulting from stroke, and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, on the average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds |
| 13 | in the United States and takes a life every 4 minutes, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, the estimated direct and indirect costs of stroke |
| 15 | in the United States this year will be more than $73.7 billion, |
| 16 | and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, many Americans are unaware of their risk factors |
| 18 | for a stroke and are unaware of the signs and symptoms of an |
| 19 | impending stroke, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, statistics show that African Americans have almost |
| 21 | twice the risk of a first stroke compared to Caucasians, in part |
| 22 | because of their increased risk of high blood pressure and |
| 23 | diabetes, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 25 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 26 | Florida: |
| 27 |
|
| 28 | That May 2011 is recognized as "Power to End Stroke Month" |
| 29 | in Florida and that all residents of this state are urged to |
| 30 | recognize that stroke must be taken seriously in order to reduce |
| 31 | its risks. |
| 32 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Floridians are urged to |
| 33 | become familiar with the warning signs, symptoms, and risk |
| 34 | factors associated with stroke and live stronger, healthier |
| 35 | lives. |
