    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to certification of emergency medical
    3         technicians and paramedics; amending s. 401.27, F.S.;
    4         revising requirements for certification or
    5         recertification as an emergency medical technician or
    6         paramedic; providing an effective date.

    8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
    9  
   10         Section 1. Subsection (4) of section 401.27, Florida
   11  Statutes, is amended to read:
   12         401.27 Personnel; standards and certification.—
   13         (4) An applicant for certification or recertification as an
   14  emergency medical technician or paramedic must:
   15         (a) Have completed an appropriate training course as
   16  follows:
   17         1. For an emergency medical technician, an emergency
   18  medical technician training course equivalent to the most recent
   19  emergency medical technician basic training course of the United
   20  States Department of Transportation as approved by the
   21  department;
   22         2. For a paramedic, a paramedic training program equivalent
   23  to the most recent paramedic course of the United States
   24  Department of Transportation as approved by the department;
   25         (b) Have completed an appropriate examination as follows:
   26         1. For an emergency medical technician, passing within 2
   27  years after course completion the National Registry of Emergency
   28  Medical Technician’s certification examination;
   29         2. For a paramedic, passing within 2 years after course
   30  completion an examination developed or required by the
   31  department;
   32         (c)(d)Hold appropriate certification as follows: Within 1
   33  year after course completion have passed an examination
   34  developed or required by the department;
   35         (e)1. For an emergency medical technician, hold either a
   36  current American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation
   37  course card or an American Red Cross cardiopulmonary
   38  resuscitation course card or its equivalent as defined by
   39  department rule;
   40         2. For a paramedic, hold a certificate of successful course
   41  completion in advanced cardiac life support from the American
   42  Heart Association or its equivalent as defined by department
   43  rule;
   44         (d)(b) Certify under oath that he or she is not addicted to
   45  alcohol or any controlled substance;
   46         (e)(c) Certify under oath that he or she is free from any
   47  physical or mental defect or disease that might impair the
   48  applicant’s ability to perform his or her duties;
   49         (f) Submit the certification fee and the nonrefundable
   50  examination fee prescribed in s. 401.34, which examination fee
   51  will be required for each examination administered to an
   52  applicant; and
   53         (g) Submit a completed application to the department, which
   54  application documents compliance with paragraphs (a), (b), (d),
   55  (c), (e), (f), (g), and, if applicable, (c) (d). The application
   56  must be submitted so as to be received by the department at
   57  least 30 calendar days before the next regularly scheduled
   58  examination for which the applicant desires to be scheduled.
   59         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2012.
