    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to the visitation of schools by state
    3         legislators; amending s. 1001.4205, F.S.; authorizing
    4         a member of the State Legislature to visit any
    5         district school in his or her legislative district;
    6         providing an effective date.

    8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
    9  
   10         Section 1. Section 1001.4205, Florida Statutes, is amended
   11  to read:
   12         1001.4205 Visitation of schools by an individual school
   13  board or charter school governing board member.—An individual
   14  member of a district school board may, on any day and at any
   15  time at his or her pleasure, visit any district school in his or
   16  her school district. An individual member of the State
   17  Legislature may, on any day and at any time at his or her
   18  pleasure, visit any district school in his or her legislative
   19  district. An individual member of a charter school governing
   20  board member may, on any day and at any time at his or her
   21  pleasure, visit any charter school governed by the charter
   22  school’s governing board.
   23         (1) The visiting individual board member must sign in and
   24  sign out at the school’s main office and wear his or her board
   25  or State Legislature identification badge, as applicable, at all
   26  times while present on school premises.
   27         (2) The board, the school, or any other person or entity,
   28  including, but not limited to, the principal of the school, the
   29  school superintendent, or any other board member, may not
   30  require the visiting individual board member to provide notice
   31  before visiting the school.
   32         (3) The school may offer, but may not require, an escort to
   33  accompany the a visiting individual board member during the
   34  visit.
   35         (4) A Another board member or a district employee,
   36  including, but not limited to, the superintendent, the school
   37  principal, or the superintendent’s or the principal’s his or her
   38  designee, may not limit the duration or scope of the visit or
   39  direct the a visiting individual board member to leave the
   40  premises.
   41         (5) A board, district, or school administrative policy or
   42  practice may not prohibit or limit the authority granted to the
   43  visiting individual a board member under this section.
   44         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2018.
