Senate Democratic Leader Gary Farmer Issues Thanksgiving Day Statement
As Florida prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, Senate Democratic Leader Gary Farmer (D-Lighthouse Point) on Wednesday issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Senate Democratic Caucus, I offer my prayers this Thanksgiving in gratitude for the many blessings we have received, and the strength to continue our resolve to defeat this pandemic that has upended our lives for most of 2020.
“The suffering Floridians have faced is profound and widespread, as families and friends remain separated or remember those they have lost to this disease, and those still struggling to recover. Rather than mandate simple, preventative measures, our state was thrown wide open to a virulent virus allowed to roam at will.
“But the damage wasn’t exclusive to Floridians’ health. COVID-19 eroded our economy with a vengeance, destroying jobs and small businesses built over a lifetime of hard work. Worse, the unemployment lifeline so many were forced to rely on was a flimsy one that quickly frayed, leaving many who reluctantly sought government help for the first time in their lives, abandoned and fed up. For many of them now forced to turn to charity, Thanksgiving dinner may be just a distant memory this year, as the response from Tallahassee has been a shrug, at best.
“So as we join the nation to offer our thanks, let us remember those who continue to struggle. Let us hope that as 2020 draws to a close and a new year begins, our governor and our legislature remember the suffering the people of this state have endured, and resolve to repair and reform the systems that failed Floridians when they needed them most.”
