17 Section 1. (1) There is established the Mathematics
18 and Sciences Study Commission to determine the feasibility of
19 creating a public-private, residential, coeducational academy
20 offering an advanced curriculum in mathematics and sciences
21 for students in grades 11 and 12 using the K-16 philosophy to
22 prepare students for professional careers in this state. The
23 commission shall select a private partner, a State University
24 System partner, the locale, and the estimated operating cost
25 for the academy.
26 (2) Members of the commission shall be appointed as
27 follows:
28 (a) The Governor shall appoint five members, including
29 a math or science teacher, a member of the Enterprise Florida
30 Board of Directors, a principal or administrator of a state
31 public school, a member of the Board of Regents, and a member

2 Accountability.
3 (b) The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the
4 House of Representatives shall each appoint a member of the
5 majority party and a member of the minority party of their
6 respective houses.
7 (c) The Commissioner of Education shall appoint five
8 members, including a math or science teacher, a member of the
9 Enterprise Florida Board of Directors, a member of the Florida
10 School Board Administrators Association, and a member of the
11 Postsecondary Education Planning Commission.
12 (3) The commission shall be staffed by the
13 Postsecondary Education Planning Commission and the Florida
14 Commission on Education Reform and Accountability. Regular
15 meetings may be held for 2 days each month and at such other
16 times as the commission deems necessary, after all members
17 have been appointed.
18 (4) Commission members and staff shall receive
19 reimbursement for per diem and travel expenses incurred in the
20 performance of their duties, as provided in s. 112.061,
21 Florida Statutes.
22 (5) The commission shall present its findings and
23 recommendations to the Governor, the President of the Senate,
24 the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the
25 Commissioner of Education by January 1, 1999, at which time
26 the commission shall be terminated.
27 Section 2. There is hereby appropriated from General
28 Revenue, the sum of $75,000 for the Mathematics and Science
29 Study Commission.
30 Section 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
31 law.
