Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HM 1303 By Representatives Tobin, Lippman, Morse, Villalobos, Crow, Wasserman Schultz, Effman, Ritter, Geller, Sanderson, Rayson, Eggelletion, Mackenzie, Dawson-White and Stafford 1 House Memorial 2 A memorial to the Congress of the United 3 States, urging Congress to reauthorize the 4 Older Americans Act. 5 6 WHEREAS, since its passage in 1965, the Older Americans 7 Act has been the prime funding source for aging programs 8 benefitting the multiple needs of persons who are age 60 and 9 older, and 10 WHEREAS, this important legislation provides 11 appropriations to support senior centers, Meals on Wheels, 12 transportation, adult day care, homemakers services, legal 13 services, home repair, and information and referral services 14 planned by local Area Agencies on Aging to help delay or 15 prevent institutionalization, and 16 WHEREAS, Florida is the year-round home of more than 17 3.3 million senior citizens, many of whom rely on Older 18 Americans Act Services for their daily sustenance, and 19 WHEREAS, the Older Americans Act has been calendared 20 for reauthorization in 1995, 1996, and 1997, but placed on a 21 continuation budget for each of the specified years, and 22 WHEREAS, the legislation usually is reauthorized for a 23 period of three or four consecutive years; NOW, THEREFORE, 24 25 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 26 27 That the Congress of the United States is requested to 28 reauthorize the Older Americans Act for a five-year period 29 beginning January 1, 1998, or sooner, to help assure the 30 merited right of older Americans to live their retirement 31 years with merited dignity. 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
