  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to high school graduation

  3         requirements; providing mathematics, science,

  4         and language requirements for the college-ready

  5         diploma; providing a minimum grade-point

  6         average; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9

10         Section 1.  (1)  Notwithstanding any provision of law

11  to the contrary and in addition to other requirements, the

12  requirements for a college-ready high school diploma in this

13  state include:

14         (a)  Two credits in algebra and one credit in geometry

15  or higher-level mathematics courses, or their equivalents, as

16  determined by the state board.

17         (b)  One credit in biology, one credit in chemistry,

18  and one credit in physics, or their equivalents, as determined

19  by the state board.

20         (c)  Two credits in the same foreign language. A

21  student whose native language is not English is exempt from

22  this requirement if the student demonstrates proficiency in

23  the native language. American sign language constitutes a

24  foreign language.

25         (2)  To receive a high school diploma, a student must

26  have a minimum 2.0 grade-point average in the subjects

27  required for graduation.

28         (3)  The provisions of this section apply only to

29  students entering grade 9 in the 1999-2000 school year and

30  thereafter.

31         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1998.

                       COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR
  2                             SB 1536

  4  The committee substitute differs from SB 1536 as follows:

  5  The requirements of the bill apply to students entering grade
    9 in the 1999-2000 school year.
  6
    Higher level mathematics courses may be substituted for
  7  algebra and geometry.

  8  The 2.0 grade point average required for graduation is changed
    to an overall grade point average.
  9
    The requirements are applicable only to the college-ready
10  diploma.
