2 An act relating to motor vehicle liability
3 insurance; amending s. 324.072, F.S.; requiring
4 increased minimum limits of bodily injury
5 coverage after DUI convictions; providing a
6 penalty; providing an effective date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Subsection (3) is added to section 324.072,
11 Florida Statutes, to read:
12 324.072 Proof required upon certain convictions.--
13 (3) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, any
14 person who has been convicted of a violation of s. 316.193 or
15 a similar law of another state shall provide proof of
16 financial responsibility under s. 324.021(7)(a) of $100,000
17 and under s. 324.021(7)(b) of $200,000 in order to renew any
18 license and registration suspended or revoked pursuant to s.
19 322.26 or s. 322.27 and must maintain such proof of financial
20 responsibility in order to own or operate a motor vehicle in
21 this state. Failure by such person to maintain such proof of
22 financial responsibility shall result in immediate revocation
23 of any license and registration of such person. Any person
24 subject to this subsection who operates a motor vehicle
25 without maintaining proof of financial responsibility pursuant
26 to this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the first degree,
27 punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
28 Section 2. This act shall take effect October 1, 1997.
