1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to motor vehicle licenses;
3 amending s. 320.08058, F.S.; providing for a
4 generic collegiate specialty license plate for
5 independent universities and community colleges
6 in the state; providing for an individual decal
7 representing the specific independent
8 university or community college; reducing the
9 number of signatures required to be obtained
10 for the issuance of such specialty plates;
11 providing an effective date.

13 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
14
15 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (3) of section
16 320.08058, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
17 320.08058 Specialty license plates.--
18 (3) COLLEGIATE LICENSE PLATES.--
19 (a)1. The department shall develop a collegiate
20 license plate as provided in this section for state and
21 independent universities domiciled in this state. However,
22 any collegiate license plate created or established after
23 January 1, 1997, must comply with the requirements of s.
24 320.08053 and be specifically authorized by an act of the
25 Legislature. Collegiate license plates must bear the colors
26 and design approved by the department as appropriate for each
27 state and independent university. The word "Florida" must be
28 stamped across the bottom of the plate in small letters.
29 2. Effective January 1, 1999, the department shall
30 develop a generic collegiate license plate as provided in this
31 section for independent universities and community colleges

1 domiciled in this state. Any generic collegiate license plate
2 created or established for an independent university or
3 community college pursuant to this subparagraph is not
4 required to comply with the provisions of s. 320.08053, but
5 must be specifically authorized by an act of the Legislature.
6 Collegiate license plates for independent universities and
7 community colleges domiciled in this state must be generic in
8 form, must bear the colors and design approved by the
9 department, and must bear a decal approved by the department
10 which shall be designed to be appropriate for each qualified
11 independent university or community college. Any other
12 provision of law to the contrary notwithstanding, effective
13 January 1, 1999, a generic collegiate license plate shall be
14 approved for each independent university or community college
15 in the state which collects 1,000 or more signatures of
16 persons agreeing to purchase such a specialty license plate.
17 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
18 law.
