  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to Broward County; providing

  3         for the election of school board members of

  4         Broward County from single-member residential

  5         areas within the district; providing for a

  6         referendum; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  All seven members of the Broward County

11  School Board shall reside one in each of seven residential

12  areas, the areas together covering the entire district and as

13  nearly equal in population as practicable, pursuant to s.

14  230.061, F.S., each of whom shall be nominated and elected

15  only by the qualified electors who reside in the same

16  residence area as the member.

17         Section 2.  The Broward County School Board shall

18  provide for the orderly transition to election from

19  single-member residence areas as the terms of incumbent school

20  board members expire.

21         Section 3.  This act shall take effect only upon its

22  approval by a majority vote of those qualified electors of

23  Broward County voting in a referendum to be held by the Board

24  of County Commissioners of Broward County in conjunction with

25  the next primary, general, special, or other election to be

26  held in Broward County, except that this section shall take

27  effect upon becoming a law.
