  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to Broward County; providing

  3         for the election of school board members of

  4         Broward County from single-member districts

  5         within the school board district; providing for

  6         a referendum; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9

10         Section 1.  The Broward County School Board shall

11  consist of nine members, at least six of whom shall reside in

12  and be elected from single-member districts, and the remaining

13  members shall be elected as members at large. The number of

14  single-member districts shall be determined by the Broward

15  County School Board. The single-member districts shall

16  comprise the entire school board district and shall be as

17  nearly equal in population as practicable, pursuant to s.

18  230.061, Florida Statutes. Each school board member from a

19  single-member district shall be nominated and elected only by

20  the qualified electors who reside in the same district as the

21  member, except that each at-large member shall be nominated

22  and elected only by the qualified electors who reside in the

23  same county as the member.

24         Section 2.  The Broward County School Board shall

25  provide for the orderly transition to election from

26  single-member residence areas as the terms of incumbent school

27  board members expire.

28         Section 3.  This act shall take effect only upon its

29  approval by a majority vote of those qualified electors of

30  Broward County voting in a referendum to be held by the Board

31  of County Commissioners of Broward County in conjunction with

  1  the next primary, general, special, or other election to be

  2  held in Broward County, except that this section shall take

  3  effect upon becoming a law.
