2 An act relating to district school board
3 elections; providing for a referendum in
4 certain counties with respect to the
5 composition and manner of electing the school
6 board; requiring affected school boards to
7 provide an orderly transition to a school board
8 so composed if approved by the electors;
9 providing an effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. (1) In a county that has a population of
14 650,000 or more persons as of the last decennial census, other
15 than a county as defined in section 125.011(1), Florida
16 Statutes, the district school board shall submit to the
17 electors for approval at a referendum to be held on the first
18 Tuesday after the first Monday in November 1998 the question
19 of whether the school board should be composed of nine
20 members, seven of whom are to be elected from a single-member
21 residence area by electors residing in the single-member
22 residence area only, and two of whom are to be elected
23 at-large, notwithstanding the provisions of section 230.061,
24 section 230.10, or section 230.105, Florida Statutes.
25 (2) If the electors approve such election of district
26 school board members, the seven single-member residence areas
27 must be drawn by the school board, and the district school
28 board shall provide for the orderly transition to such
29 election of school board members as the terms of incumbent
30 school board members expire.

1 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
2 law.
