1 Senate Resolution No.
2 A resolution commending the health maintenance
3 organization industry and recognizing March 11,
4 1998, as "Florida HMO Day."

6 WHEREAS, by fostering healthful behaviors and habits in
7 members when they are young, health maintenance organizations
8 influence and promote healthful behaviors that will remain
9 with children throughout their lives, and
10 WHEREAS, health maintenance organizations have helped
11 reduce the infant mortality rate in this state by 22 percent
12 over the last 5 years, and
13 WHEREAS, health maintenance organizations have played a
14 major role in timely immunizing 83 percent of the 2-year-old
15 children in this state, and
16 WHEREAS, the nationally renowned Florida Healthy Kids
17 program relies on health maintenance organizations exclusively
18 to provide health care coverage, and
19 WHEREAS, the Institute for Child Health Policy reports
20 that 94 percent of Florida Healthy Kids enrollees say that
21 they are very satisfied with their access to care and their
22 relationship with their health care providers, and
23 WHEREAS, a preliminary report from the Institute for
24 Child Health Policy shows that between 83 percent and 90
25 percent of children enrolled in health maintenance
26 organizations have received immunizations in accordance with
27 the guidelines of the American Association of Pediatrics, and
28 WHEREAS, a study by the Institute for Child Health
29 Policy shows that children's health care utilization rates in
30 the Florida Healthy Kids program matched projected health care

1 utilization rates, based on diagnoses and health care needs,
2 and
3 WHEREAS, health maintenance organizations have saved
4 state tax payers more than $100 million in health care costs
5 over the last 3 years, and
6 WHEREAS, health maintenance organizations help provide
7 coverage to many of the state's 823,000 uninsured children,
8 NOW, THEREFORE,

10 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
11
12 That the health maintenance organization industry is
13 commended for its contributions to the health of the residents
14 of this state.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that March 11, 1998, is
16 recognized as "Florida HMO Day" by the Florida Senate.
