3 standards; amending s. 229.565, F.S.; requiring
4 the establishment of standards in certain
5 subject areas; providing an effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of section
10 229.565, Florida Statutes, as amended by chapter 97-2, Laws of
11 Florida, is amended to read:
12 229.565 Educational evaluation procedures.--
13 (1) STUDENT PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.--
14 (a) The State Board of Education shall approve student
15 performance standards in the various program categories and
16 chronological grade levels which the Commissioner of Education
17 designates as necessary for maintaining a good educational
18 system. The standards must apply, without limitation, to
19 language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts,
20 health and physical education, and foreign language, reading,
21 writing, history, government, geography, economics, and
22 computer literacy. The commissioner shall obtain opinions and
23 advice from citizens, educators, and members of the business
24 community in developing the standards. For purposes of this
25 section, the term "student performance standard" means a
26 statement describing a skill or competency students are
27 expected to learn.
28 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1997.
