  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution designating March 16, 1998, as FSU

  3         Day in Tallahassee.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State

  6  University is the oldest continuous site of higher education

  7  in Florida, and

  8         WHEREAS, Florida State University (FSU) was founded as

  9  an institution of higher learning in 1851 by legislative act

10  and began enrolling students at Tallahassee in 1857, and

11         WHEREAS, spring 1998 marks the fiftieth anniversary of

12  the ratification of the Florida State University Constitution

13  by its faculty, an act that set the institution on course

14  toward its present standing as a bastion of the liberal arts,

15  and

16         WHEREAS, more than 197,000 men and women have graduated

17  from Florida State University, and its success as an

18  institution is reflected in the success of those graduates

19  around the world, and

20         WHEREAS, the university's mission emphasizes teaching,

21  research, and public service, and its students study in 16

22  colleges and schools, which offer undergraduate and graduate

23  degrees in more than 342 fields, and

24         WHEREAS, U.S. News and World Report ranked Florida

25  State University the "most efficient university" for the

26  second year in a row in its 1998 "America's Best Colleges"

27  issue, and

28         WHEREAS, the graduation rate at Florida State

29  University is well above the national average and is the best

30  among Florida's state universities, and

  1         WHEREAS, while developing internationally recognized

  2  programs in the fine arts and performing arts and in the basic

  3  sciences and social sciences, Florida State University has

  4  also developed strong student-life programs, including one of

  5  the major intercollegiate athletic programs in the country,

  6  and

  7         WHEREAS, FSU alumni currently serving in the Florida

  8  Senate include Senators W.D. Childers, Pensacola; Charlie

  9  Crist, St. Petersburg; John Grant, Tampa; Jim Horne,

10  Jacksonville; John McKay, Bradenton; and Charles D. Williams,

11  Jr., Tallahassee, and

12         WHEREAS, FSU alumni also include current

13  Representatives Keith Arnold, Ft. Myers; Cynthia Chestnut,

14  Gainesville; Greg Allen Gay, Cape Coral; Debbie Horan, Key

15  West; Everett Kelly, Tavares; Jim King, Jacksonville; Al

16  Lawson, Tallahassee; Sharon Merchant, Palm Beach Gardens;

17  Beryl Roberts-Burke, Carol City; John Thrasher, Orange Park;

18  and J. Alex Villalobos, Miami, NOW, THEREFORE,

20  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

21

22         That March 16, 1998, is designated as FSU Day in

23  Tallahassee.

24         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

25  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Sandy

26  D'Alemberte, President of Florida State University, as a

27  tangible token of the esteem of the Florida Senate.
