Whitcomb Building"; 8 directing the Department of Management Services 9 to erect suitable markers; designating and 10 naming the president's residence at the 11 University of Central Florida as the "Burnett 12 House"; authorizing the University of Central 13 Florida to erect suitable markers; designating 14 and naming the School of Communications at the 15 University of Central Florida as the "Anthony 16 J. Nicholson School of Communications"; 17 authorizing the University of Central Florida 18 to erect suitable markers; providing an 19 effective date. 20 21 WHEREAS, the late John H. Whitcomb, M.D., was a 22 distinguished pediatrician and pediatric cardiologist, with 23 over 35 years of practice in Florida, and 24 WHEREAS, Dr. Whitcomb had been Director of Medical 25 Affairs at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and Director of 26 Children's Medical Services for District I of the Department 27 of Health and Rehabilitative Services, and 28 WHEREAS, Reed Bell, Sr., M.D., is a distinguished 29 pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist, with over 35 years 30 of practice and teaching experience and a multitude of 31 professional and academic achievements in these fields, and 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions. Florida House of Representatives - 1997 CS/HB 227 171-570-97 1 WHEREAS, Dr. Bell is presently Director of Children's 2 Medical Services for District I of the Department of Health, 3 and 4 WHEREAS, it is a fitting tribute to the accomplishments 5 of these two dedicated pediatric physicians that the 6 Children's Medical Services facility in Pensacola be named in 7 their honor, and 8 WHEREAS, Al and Nancy Burnett have been long-time 9 friends of higher education and, in particular, the University 10 of Central Florida, and 11 WHEREAS, their generosity established the Al 12 Burnett-Contemporary Cars Eminent Scholar Chair in Accounting 13 at the University of Central Florida in 1993, and 14 WHEREAS, the Burnett gifts to the University of Central 15 Florida now exceed $1,000,000, and 16 WHEREAS, Al and Nancy Burnett are supporters of many 17 community activities in Central Florida such as diabetes 18 research, United Way, the Orlando Science Center, and the 19 Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch, and 20 WHEREAS, the latest Burnett gift to the University of 21 Central Florida provided the funds needed to complete the 22 first president's residence at the university, and 23 WHEREAS, Anthony J. Nicholson, has been a resident of 24 Central Florida since 1968 and a successful developer, and 25 WHEREAS, he has bequeathed a charitable gift to the 26 University of Central Florida valued at $2,000,000 and 27 intended to endow the programs of the School of Communications 28 at the University of Central Florida, and 29 WHEREAS, this generous gift will qualify the School of 30 Communications for a state matching appropriation, creating a 31 2 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions. Florida House of Representatives - 1997 CS/HB 227 171-570-97 1 fund to sustain academic excellence in the academic activities 2 of the School of Communications in perpetuity, and 3 WHEREAS, the University of Central Florida desires to 4 designate the School of Communications as the "Anthony J. 5 Nicholson School of Communications," NOW, THEREFORE, 6 7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 8 9 Section 1. The Children's Medical Services facility 10 presently under construction at 5192 Bayou Boulevard in the 11 City of Pensacola, Escambia County, is hereby designated as 12 the "Dr. Reed Bell and Dr. John H. Whitcomb Building." 13 Section 2. The Department of Management Services is 14 authorized and directed to erect appropriate markers 15 designating the "Dr. Reed Bell and Dr. John H. Whitcomb 16 Building." 17 Section 3. The president's residence at the University 18 of Central Florida is hereby designated as the "Burnett 19 House." 20 Section 4. The University of Central Florida is 21 authorized to erect suitable markers designating the "Burnett 22 House." 23 Section 5. The School of Communications at the 24 University of Central Florida is hereby designated as the 25 "Anthony J. Nicholson School of Communications." 26 Section 6. The University of Central Florida is 27 authorized to erect suitable markers designating the "Anthony 28 J. Nicholson School of Communications." 29 Section 7.
