  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution honoring Barbara Brown, a language

  3         arts middle school teacher, as Hillsborough

  4         County's 1998 Teacher of the Year.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Barbara Brown has a master's degree in English

  7  from the University of South Florida, is one of 9,730

  8  classroom teachers in Hillsborough County, has 23 years of

  9  teaching experience, has been nominated as Teacher of the Year

10  in Hillsborough County four times, and this year has been

11  named the 1998 Teacher of the Year, and

12         WHEREAS, Barbara Brown chairs the school improvement

13  team at Middleton Magnet School of Technology and works with

14  the student newspaper and the yearbook, and

15         WHEREAS, Barbara knows what a tremendous amount of

16  power a teacher has in the classroom and credits Medora Brown,

17  her 11th grade English teacher at Robinson High School, with

18  inspiring her to become a teacher who encourages students to

19  let their imaginations run loose, and

20         WHEREAS, in her acceptance speech at the Hillsborough

21  Education Foundation banquet Barbara also thanked Sylvia

22  Kimbell for helping her stay in the teaching profession when

23  she was ready to "throw it in" after the death of her 5-year

24  old son from cancer, and

25         WHEREAS, Principal Charles Dixon at Middleton School

26  recently said, "She's the kind of person who takes a big task

27  and makes it seem simple, makes it seem fun. Her enthusiasm is

28  infectious. She's an all-around great person," NOW, THEREFORE,

30  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  1         That Barbara Brown is commended for her lifelong

  2  dedication to teaching and for being named as Hillsborough

  3  County Teacher of the Year for 1998.

  4         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

  5  with the seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Barbara

  6  Brown as a tangible token of the sentiments and good wishes of

  7  the Florida Senate.
