13         Amendment 

14  remove from the bill:  everything after the enacting clause

16  and insert in lieu thereof:

17         Section 1.  There is hereby appropriated the sum of

18  $184 million from the General Revenue Fund to the Department

19  of Education for the purpose of class size reduction in grades

20  kindergarten through grade three.  These funds are in addition

21  to the funds appropriated in Specific Appropriation 118 of the

22  General Appropriations Act for FY 1998-99 and shall be

23  distributed by prorating to each school district based on each

24  district's October 1997 student membership for kindergarten

25  through grade three. 

26         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1998.
