  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing the month of January

  3         1999 as Amelia Earhart Month.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Amelia Earhart was an internationally renowned

  6  aviator when she disappeared in 1937, and

  7         WHEREAS, Amelia Earhart was the first woman

  8  transatlantic air passenger in 1928, the first woman to fly

  9  solo across the Atlantic, and the first woman to be awarded

10  the United States Distinguished Flying Cross, and

11         WHEREAS, Amelia Earhart encouraged women to expand

12  their horizons by exploring occupations and holding positions

13  beyond those traditionally held by women, and

14         WHEREAS, Amelia Earhart was a beloved member of Zonta

15  International before she was lost in the Pacific Ocean while

16  attempting to circle the globe by air in 1937, and

17         WHEREAS, in 1938, one year after her disappearance,

18  Zonta International established its annual graduate

19  fellowships in aerospace-related sciences and engineering, in

20  honor of Amelia Earhart, and

21         WHEREAS, Zonta International fellowships are open to

22  women of any nationality, and grants may be used in any

23  institution offering fully accredited graduate courses and

24  degrees in aerospace-related sciences and engineering, and

25         WHEREAS, Zonta International has awarded fellowships

26  for study in such fields as aerospace engineering, astronomy,

27  astrophysics, biomedical engineering, computer science, fluid

28  mechanics, geological oceanography, meteorology, molecular

29  biology, and space medicine, and

30         WHEREAS, since its inception, Zonta International has

31  awarded 816 fellowships to more than 41 women from 28

  1  countries, totaling $3.7 million, as a living memorial to

  2  Amelia Earhart, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  5

  6         That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of January

  7  1999 as Amelia Earhart Month.
