2 A resolution commending Pensacola Junior
3 College on the 50th Anniversary of its
4 founding.

6 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College was the first public
7 community college established by the 1947 Legislature, and
8 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College established its
9 operations on the corner of Cervantes and Palafox Streets, on
10 September 8, 1948, and admitted its first students on
11 September 13, 1948, and
12 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College has served the
13 residents of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties since that time
14 with facilities in Pensacola, Warrington, Milton,
15 NAS/Pensacola, and Downtown Pensacola, and
16 WHEREAS, under the leadership of presidents Henry L.
17 Ashmore, T. Felton Harrison, Horace E. Hartsell and
18 president-designate Charles A. Atwell, along with members of
19 the college's Board of Trustees, Pensacola Junior College has
20 provided higher education to more than 500,000 students since
21 1948, and has offered cultural, athletic, and social
22 opportunities to many thousands more, and
23 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College has provided
24 Associate of Arts transfer opportunities, Associate of Science
25 career opportunities, and invaluable assistance to business,
26 industry, and government for fifty years, and
27 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College will celebrate its
28 50th Anniversary on September 13, 1998, NOW, THEREFORE,

30 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

1 That Pensacola Junior College and its Board of
2 Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and graduates are
3 congratulated on the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the
4 Junior College.
5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
6 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to
7 president-designate Charles A. Atwell and Pensacola Junior
8 College as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida
9 Senate.
