  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing the 10th anniversary

  3         of Miami-Dade Days in Tallahassee.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, in 1957, the voters of Dade County approved a

  6  metropolitan form of government, and Miami-Dade County became

  7  the first in the state to achieve "home rule" status, and

  8         WHEREAS, since its inception in 1836, Dade County's

  9  population has grown from an 1850 census count of 96 to over 2

10  million, living in 29 municipalities and the vast

11  unincorporated areas of the county, and

12         WHEREAS, aided in part by the mass emigration to the

13  area begun in 1960 in the wake of the communist power seizure

14  in Cuba, Miami-Dade County, located along the southeastern tip

15  of the Florida peninsula, is a vibrant multicultural

16  community, truly the "Capital of the Americas," and

17         WHEREAS, simply known as Metro-Dade, the government,

18  recognized as a leading local government in the United States,

19  not only provides both neighborhood and countywide services to

20  its citizens, but also operates five airports, including Miami

21  International, the second busiest for international passenger

22  traffic in the Western Hemisphere, and the Port of Miami, the

23  largest cruise port in the world and among the busiest cargo

24  ports in the hemisphere, and

25         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County enjoys a broad spectrum of

26  entertainment and is the chosen home to dozens of

27  internationally renowned entertainers, from Sylvester

28  Stallone, Madonna, and Julio Iglesias to Gloria and Emilio

29  Estefan, and

30         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is home to the New World

31  Symphony, currently celebrating its 10th anniversary as a

  1  world-class training orchestra, as well as the internationally

  2  renowned Miami City Ballet, Florida Grand Opera, and dozens of

  3  cultural institutions and museums, and

  4         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is home to four professional

  5  sports teams, counts tourism as one of its most important

  6  industries, and harvests more tropical vegetables than any

  7  other county in the nation, and

  8         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Community College has been ranked

  9  the best in the nation; the University of Miami, linked with

10  Jackson Memorial Hospital, is internationally known for its

11  medical research projects; and Florida International

12  University is among the top public commuter colleges in the

13  country, and

14         WHEREAS, 1998 marks the tenth year the area has hosted

15  Miami-Dade Days in the state capital, NOW, THEREFORE,

16

17  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

18

19         That the Florida Senate hereby recognizes April 1 and

20  2, 1998, as the 10th anniversary of Miami-Dade Days in

21  Tallahassee.
