  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution honoring the New World Symphony

  3         during its 10th anniversary season.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the New World Symphony was founded in 1987 by

  6  Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas to prepare highly

  7  gifted graduates of conservatories and music schools for

  8  leadership positions in orchestras and ensembles throughout

  9  the world, and

10         WHEREAS, at its home base in Miami Beach, the New World

11  Symphony presents a full season of orchestral, chamber music,

12  new music, and family concerts at the Lincoln Theatre, located

13  in the heart of the eclectic Art Deco District, and

14         WHEREAS, each season, the New World Symphony reaches

15  out to the community with numerous free performances,

16  including the unique Musical Exchange series that fosters

17  direct communication between musicians and the audience, as

18  well as a Music Mentor program that pairs New World musicians

19  with high school music students for lessons and professional

20  guidance, and

21         WHEREAS, in addition to performances in this state, the

22  New World Symphony has performed in many of the world's

23  cultural capitals, including New York, London, Paris,

24  Amsterdam, and Vienna, as well as in Argentina, Brazil, Costa

25  Rica, Israel, Japan, and Monaco, and

26         WHEREAS, the New World Symphony has released seven

27  recordings to date, including the Grammy-Award-nominated

28  "Tangazo," highlighting classical music of Latin America, and

29         WHEREAS, the success of the New World Symphony is

30  measured by alumni who have gone on to positions with leading

31  orchestras both here and abroad, including the Boston

  1  Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the

  2  Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the National Symphony, as well

  3  as orchestras in Germany, Hong Kong, and Spain, NOW,

  4  THEREFORE,

  6  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  7

  8         That the Florida Senate commends the New World Symphony

  9  for its extraordinary program and for the many contributions

10  it makes to the cultural and musical life of this state.

11         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution,

12  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Michael

13  Tilson Thomas, Artistic Director of the New World Symphony.
