1 Senate Resolution No.
2 A resolution honoring Roger C. Cuevas.

4 WHEREAS, Roger C. Cuevas, as Superintendent of
5 Miami-Dade County Public Schools since November 1996, oversees
6 America's fourth-largest school district, with a $3.2 billion
7 annual budget, more than 49,600 full-time and part-time
8 employees, and 326 schools serving 1,843 prekindergarten
9 children, more than 331,500 young people in grades
10 kindergarten through 12, and nearly 200,000 adult students,
11 and
12 WHEREAS, born in Caibarien, Cuba, Roger C. Cuevas
13 attended Miami's Christopher Columbus Senior High School,
14 received an associate in arts degree from Miami-Dade Community
15 College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from
16 Florida Atlantic University, and a Master of Science degree in
17 Curriculum from the University of Northern Colorado, and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Cuevas began his career in the Miami-Dade
19 County public school system in 1969 as a primary teacher at
20 Little River Elementary School and has progressed through the
21 system in many challenging positions, including involvement
22 with students at risk, vocational, adult, career, and
23 community education, after-school care programs, and the
24 district's career education/awareness programs, and
25 WHEREAS, in his role as Associate Superintendent of the
26 Bureau of Community Services and Career Preparation, Mr.
27 Cuevas served as chief building administrator for the district
28 office complex and spearheaded the building of William H.
29 Turner Technical Arts High School, which has been named one of
30 the 10 best high schools of its kind in the nation, and

1 WHEREAS, in addition to his responsibilities with
2 Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Mr. Cuevas, married, with
3 three children, participates in many civic activities in his
4 community, as evidenced by his membership in such
5 organizations as the Kendall Federation of Homeowners
6 Association, the Dade County Youth Fair Association, and the
7 Greater Miami, Coral Gables, and Latin Chambers of Commerce,
8 and was the founder of the Kendall-Hammocks Optimist Club, and
9 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that Mr. Cuevas be
10 recognized for commitment and service in his profession and
11 devotion to his community, NOW, THEREFORE,
12
13 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
14
15 That the Florida Senate hereby honors Roger C. Cuevas,
16 Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
18 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Roger C.
19 Cuevas as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
