1 Senate Resolution No.
2 A resolution commending Broward Navy Days, Inc.
3 for its achievement in coordinating community
4 efforts to honor visiting U.S. Navy, Marine
5 Corps, and Coast Guard personnel in the Broward
6 community.

8 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days, Inc. commenced its
9 operations as a not-for-profit Florida corporation on May 29,
10 1990, and
11 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days was established to
12 coordinate community efforts to honor and entertain visiting
13 Navy personnel with a special emphasis on the promotion and
14 encouragement of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ship visits at Port
15 Everglades, and
16 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days works on a year-round basis
17 with various service clubs, the local Navy League Councils,
18 the Port Everglades Department of Broward County, local
19 cities, and Broward County businesses and civic associations
20 to maximize and enhance the warm reception and entertainment
21 received by visiting U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard
22 personnel in the Broward community, and
23 WHEREAS, the visiting U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and
24 Coast Guard officers and sailors contribute an estimated $50
25 million annually to the Broward County economy, and
26 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days is the coordinator and
27 sponsor of the annual Fleet Week celebration held in October
28 of each year to commemorate the birthday of the U.S. Navy with
29 celebration activities, including the visit of between 10 to
30 15 Navy ships, a grand birthday party, a golf tournament, a
31 Sailor of the Year reception, an opportunity for thousands of

1 civilians to tour the U.S. Navy vessels, sports and
2 entertainment activities for sailors and officers, a poster
3 contest for local school children, celebrity chef luncheons on
4 board U.S. Navy ships, a five-kilometer fun run, and numerous
5 other activities, including a dinner in 1998 aboard the
6 aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) honoring the
7 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients residing in the State
8 of Florida, and
9 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days endeavors to recognize the
10 meritorius service of deserving sailors by honoring the Sailor
11 of the Year and Junior Sailor of the Year on each U.S. Navy
12 and U.S. Coast Guard ship that calls at Port Everglades, and
13 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days developed the "Hands Across
14 the Sea Program" whereby hundreds of visiting sailors
15 volunteer their services year-round to local charities and
16 needy residents of Broward County, and through their generous
17 efforts the sailors have painted houses, performed
18 landscaping, worked with the handicapped, needy, neglected and
19 abused children, and visited schools and homes for the
20 elderly, and
21 WHEREAS, Broward Navy Days has presented the
22 opportunity for visiting officers and sailors to enjoy local
23 sporting events by providing them tickets, transportation, and
24 tailgate parties for Miami Dolphins and University of Miami
25 football games, University of Miami basketball games, Florida
26 Marlins baseball games, Florida Panthers hockey games, and the
27 Sunshine Football Classic Bowl game, and
28 WHEREAS, through the efforts of Broward Navy Days and
29 the local community, Port Everglades and Broward County are
30 consistently voted by the officers and sailors as the favorite
31 liberty port of the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet, and

1 WHEREAS, it is both fitting and proper for the Florida
2 Senate to express its admiration and approval of the
3 distinguished service provided by Broward Navy Days, Inc. to
4 the members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard,
5 NOW, THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the Broward Navy Days, Inc. is commended for its
10 outstanding work in coordinating efforts to honor visiting
11 U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel in the
12 Broward community.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
14 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Broward
15 Navy Days, Inc. as a tangible token of the sentiments and good
16 wishes of the Florida Senate.
