  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution commending the State Champion Mt.

  3         Dora High School Hurricanes, winners of the

  4         1998 Class 4A Florida High School Basketball

  5         Championship.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, on March 7, 1998, the Mt. Dora High School

  8  Hurricanes defeated the Jacksonville Ribault High School

  9  Trojans 55-48 to win their first state championship at the

10  Class 4A Florida High School Basketball Tournament held at the

11  Lakeland Center, and

12         WHEREAS, the Hurricanes finished their regular season

13  with an astounding school record of 33 wins and 3 losses in a

14  difficult schedule that included 19 teams that made the

15  playoffs, and

16         WHEREAS, Mt. Dora's strength, both during the regular

17  season and in the playoffs, was a man-to-man defense that

18  allowed only one team to score as many as 50 points against

19  the Hurricanes during postseason play, and

20         WHEREAS, Mt. Dora, which had not been to the state

21  championship tournament since 1967 and had not been in the

22  championship game since 1964, faced a Ribault team with a

23  state tournament tradition of 13 appearances and four state

24  championships to its credit, and

25         WHEREAS, Mt. Dora emerged victorious in the state

26  championship by virtue of a truly remarkable team effort and

27  with tremendous fan support from the citizens of Mt. Dora and

28  Lake County, and

29         WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the citizens of

30  Mt. Dora and Lake County celebrate the championship season of

31  team members Anthony Banner, Chad Boyd, Greg Brittian, Brandon

  7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  9         That the Senate of the State of Florida hereby

10  commmends and congratulates the State Champion Mt. Dora High

11  School Hurricanes, winners of the 1998 Class 4A High School

12  Basketball State Championship.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution

14  be presented to team members Anthony Banner, Chad Boyd, Greg

15  Brittian, Brandon Durias, Byron Durias, Isaac Johnson, Kendrix

16  Jones, Josh Koester, Kendrick Manor, Sean Peterson, Josh Reed,

17  and Zach Ward, Head Coach Scott Williams, assistant coaches

18  Curtis Boyd, Ron Devlin, Bo Dixon, and John Uptak, and team

19  managers Justin Ricci and Soloman Jones as a tangible token of

20  the sentiments expressed herein.
