  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary

  3         of the Independent State of Israel.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the State of Israel was declared an

  6  independent state in 1948, and

  7         WHEREAS, the State of Israel is the independent

  8  homeland of the Jewish people, and has been host to a

  9  pluralistic society and, for 50 years, has worked to obtain

10  peace in the region with all its neighbors, and

11         WHEREAS, the people of the United States have a special

12  friendship and relationship with Israel, characterized by

13  their common commitments to freedom and democracy, and the

14  people of Florida also share with Israel an emphasis on

15  agriculture and high-tech industry as elements of their

16  economies, and

17         WHEREAS, the State of Israel has grown into a modern

18  democratic society that mirrors the will of its people and

19  seeks to defend and protect the rights of all regardless of

20  race, creed, or religion, and

21         WHEREAS, in the brief period of 50 years since its

22  rebirth, Israel has created a remarkable record of achievement

23  in agriculture, science, medicine, and technology and has

24  generously shared the fruits of its brilliant successes in

25  these fields with dozens of third-world countries, and

26         WHEREAS, the people and the government of Israel have

27  welcomed, integrated, and absorbed hundreds of thousands of

28  refugees from post-World War II Europe, Ethiopia, the Soviet

29  Union, Iran, Iraq, and many other countries, while maintaining

30  their economic and defense responsibilities and commitments

31  with courage and strength, and

  1         WHEREAS, the achievements of Israel constitute a

  2  tribute to the ideals of democracy and freedom, and the people

  3  of Florida enjoy a close relationship and affinity with the

  4  people of the State of Israel, NOW, THEREFORE,

  5

  6  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  7

  8         That the people and the nation of Israel are hereby

  9  congratulated on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the

10  independent State of Israel, and that the Florida Senate does

11  hereby call upon all people in the State of Florida to

12  participate in the various celebrations of this event,

13  recalling the ancient expression of good wishes from the Bible

14  that Israel may continue to grow from strength to strength in

15  the years ahead.

16         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution,

17  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be sent to Ambassador Dan

18  Haezrachy, acting Consul General for Israel in Florida, to the

19  Chairman of the Florida-Israel Institute, and to the

20  Presidents of the Jewish Federations in Florida.
