  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to building designations;

  3         designating a building located in Lake City as

  4         the "P.F.C. Robert H. Jenkins Veterans'

  5         Domiciliary Home of Florida"; directing the

  6         Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs to

  7         erect suitable markers; providing an effective

  8         date.

10         WHEREAS, on March 5, 1969, Private First Class Robert

11  H. Jenkins' fire base position was assaulted by a North

12  Vietnamese platoon, and

13         WHEREAS, an enemy soldier threw a hand grenade into the

14  fire base position landing next to another Marine, Private

15  First Class Robert H. Jenkins, fully realizing the inevitable

16  results of his actions, pushed his fellow Marine to the ground

17  and absorbed the full impact of the hand grenade explosion,

18  and

19         WHEREAS, Private First Class Robert H. Jenkins was

20  seriously wounded and subsequently succumbed to his wounds and

21  was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on April 20, 1970,

22  for his heroic actions, and

23         WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the Florida

24  Department of Veterans' Affairs recognize Private First Class

25  Robert H. Jenkins for his service and ultimate sacrifice to

26  his country, NOW, THEREFORE,

28  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

29

30         Section 1.  (1)  The Veterans' Domiciliary Home of

31  Florida located in Lake City, Columbia County, is hereby

  1  designated as the "P.F.C. Robert H. Jenkins Veterans'

  2  Domiciliary Home of Florida."

  3         (2)  The Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs is

  4  hereby directed to erect suitable markers designating the

  5  "P.F.C. Robert H. Jenkins Veterans' Domiciliary Home of

  6  Florida" as described in subsection (1).

  7         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  8  law.
