  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to bridge designations;

  3         co-designating the MacArthur Causeway Bridge

  4         located in Miami-Dade County as the "Trooper

  5         Robert G. Smith Bridge"; directing the

  6         Department of Transportation to erect suitable

  7         markers; providing an effective date.

  8

  9         WHEREAS, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert G.

10  Smith, a lifelong resident of Miami-Dade County, was killed in

11  the line of duty on July 26, 1997, by a suspected drunk

12  driver, and

13         WHEREAS, Trooper Smith joined the Florida Highway

14  Patrol in January 1993 and in December 1995 was appointed to

15  the Tri-County DUI Task Force that patrols the highways of

16  Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties removing

17  intoxicated drivers from our highways, and

18         WHEREAS, Trooper Smith was recognized by Mothers

19  Against Drunk Driving on the local and statewide levels for

20  four consecutive years and was a four year member of the

21  prestigious Florida Highway Patrol One Hundred Club for

22  removing over 100 drunk drivers annually from the roadways,

23  and

24         WHEREAS, the memory of Trooper Smith should not be

25  forgotten by the citizens of the state, NOW, THEREFORE,

26

27  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

28

29         Section 1.  MacArthur Causeway Bridge co-designated as

30  the "Trooper Robert G. Smith Bridge"; Department of

31  Transportation to erect suitable markers.--

  1         (1)  The MacArthur Causeway Bridge located in

  2  Miami-Dade County is hereby co-designated as the "Trooper

  3  Robert G. Smith Bridge."

  4         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

  5  erect suitable markers co-designating the MacArthur Causeway

  6  Bridge as described in subsection (1) the "Trooper Robert G.

  7  Smith Bridge."

  8         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  9  law.
