17 Section 7. Subsection (2) of section 232.17, Florida
18 Statutes, is amended to read:
19 232.17 Enforcement of school attendance.--Pursuant to
20 procedures established by the district school board, a
21 designated school representative must complete activities
22 designed to determine the cause and attempt the remediation of
23 truant behavior, as provided in this section.
24 (2) GIVE WRITTEN NOTICE.--Under the direction of the
25 superintendent, a designated school representative shall give
26 written notice, in person or by return-receipt mail, to the
27 parent, guardian, or other person having control when no valid
28 reason is found for a child's nonenrollment in school or when
29 the child has a minimum of 3 and prior to 10 but fewer than 6
30 unexcused absences within 90 school calendar days, requiring
31 enrollment or attendance within 3 days after the date of

1 notice. If the notice and requirement are ignored, the
2 designated school representative shall report the case to the
3 superintendent, and may refer the case to the case staffing
4 committee, established pursuant to s. 39.426, if the
5 conditions of s. 232.19(3) have been met. The superintendent
6 may take such steps as are necessary to bring criminal
7 prosecution against the parent, guardian, or other person
8 having control.
