  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to postsecondary education;

  3         creating s. 240.4044, F.S.; creating the

  4         Florida Working Persons Scholarship Program;

  5         providing for administration, rules,

  6         eligibility, and amount of awards; providing an

  7         effective date.

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11         Section 1.  Section 240.4044, Florida Statutes, is

12  created to read:

13         240.4044  Florida Working Persons Scholarship

14  Program.--

15         (1)  There is hereby created the Florida Working

16  Persons Scholarship Program to be administered by the

17  Department of Education in accordance with rules of the State

18  Board of Education. The purpose of the program is to enable

19  persons who are employed to pursue postsecondary education.

20         (2)  Eligibility requirements for receipt of a

21  scholarship include the following:

22         (a)  The student meets the general requirements for

23  student eligibility for state financial aid pursuant to s.

24  240.404, except as otherwise provided in this section.

25         (b)  The student has been employed for the 2 years

26  prior to application and submits proof from the employer or

27  employers of such employment.

28         (c)  The student is employed a minimum of 20 hours per

29  week and is enrolled in a minimum of 2 semesters each year, or

30  its equivalent.

  1         (3)  To be eligible for a renewal scholarship, a

  2  student must meet the requirements of paragraph (2)(c) and

  3  maintain the equivalent of a grade point average of 2.0 on a

  4  4.0 scale for all postsecondary education work attempted.

  5         (4)  Scholarships shall be awarded annually in an

  6  amount determined by the Department of Education and as funded

  7  in the General Appropriations Act.

  8         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1 of the

  9  year in which enacted.
