2 An act relating to district school board
3 elections; requiring a referendum in certain
4 counties with respect to the composition and
5 manner of electing the school board; requiring
6 affected school boards to provide for orderly
7 transition to a school board so composed if
8 approved by the electors; providing an
9 effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. (1) In a county that has a population of
14 more than 800,000 persons, but less than 1 million persons,
15 and in which the members of the board of county commissioners
16 are elected in nonpartisan elections and the members of the
17 district school board are elected in partisan elections, the
18 district school board must submit to the electors for approval
19 or rejection at a referendum to be held on the first Tuesday
20 after the first Monday in November 1998 the question of
21 whether the school board shall be composed of seven members to
22 be elected in partisan elections, each from a single-member
23 residence area by electors residing in the single-member
24 residence area only, notwithstanding the provisions of s.
25 230.061, s. 230.10, or s. 230.105, Florida Statutes.
26 (2) If the electors approve such election of district
27 school board members, the seven single-member residence areas
28 must be drawn by the district school board, and the district
29 school board shall provide for the orderly transition to such
30 election of school board members as the terms of incumbent
31 school board members expire.

1 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
2 law.
