1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to building designations;
3 designating the first building constructed on
4 the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University as
5 the "Ben Hill Griffin III Building"; directing
6 the Board of Regents of the Division of
7 Universities of the Department of Education to
8 erect suitable markers; designating the
9 University of Florida Southwest Florida
10 Research and Education Center, Institute of
11 Food and Agriculture Services Building, as the
12 "Dr. Paul H. Everett Building"; authorizing the
13 University of Florida to erect suitable
14 markers; providing an effective date.

16 WHEREAS, Ben Hill Griffin III and his family,
17 distinguished members of the business community and
18 philanthropists, are longtime supporters of education in the
19 State of Florida, and
20 WHEREAS, Ben Hill Griffin III and his family have
21 contributed many millions of dollars to the university system
22 in the State of Florida, and
23 WHEREAS, Ben Hill Griffin III, the Chairman of the
24 Alico, Inc., Board of Directors, members of the board, and
25 their stockholders have dedicated themselves to supporting
26 higher education and to continued support of the State of
27 Florida, particularly Southwest Florida, and
28 WHEREAS, Alico, through Ben Hill Griffin III, with the
29 full support of its Board of Directors, contributed a 760-acre
30 site to the Florida Board of Regents to establish the campus
31 of Florida Gulf Coast University, the 10th member of the State

1 University System of Florida, located in Southwest Florida,
2 and
3 WHEREAS, through Mr. Griffin's leadership, Alico's
4 contributions to Florida Gulf Coast University to date include
5 not only the site location but also a separate gift of 215
6 acres, $1.2 million to fund academic chairs, $2.4 million for
7 road construction, $200,000 for design assistance, and
8 cooperative planning for a 1/2-mile buffer around the
9 university site, and
10 WHEREAS, it is appropriate that loyal and distinguished
11 friends and supporters of Florida Gulf Coast University be
12 recognized for their contribution to Florida's newest
13 university, NOW, THEREFORE,

15 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
16
17 Section 1. Ben Hill Griffin III Building designated;
18 erection of suitable markers.--
19 (1) The first building constructed on the campus of
20 Florida Gulf Coast University is hereby designated as the "Ben
21 Hill Griffin III Building."
22 (2) The Board of Regents of the Division of
23 Universities of the Department of Education shall erect
24 suitable markers designating the "Ben Hill Griffin III
25 Building" as described in subsection (1).
26 Section 2. Dr. Paul H. Everett Building designated;
27 erection of suitable markers.--
28 (1) The University of Florida Southwest Florida
29 Research and Education Center, Institute of Food and
30 Agriculture Services Building, 2686 State Road 29 North,
31 Immokalee, is hereby designated as the "Dr. Paul H. Everett

1 Building" in recognition of his invaluable research for 28
2 years directed toward the development of efficient and
3 economical production of vegetable crops such as the tomato,
4 bell pepper, watermelon, cantaloupe, and cucumber.
5 (2) The University of Florida is authorized to erect
6 suitable markers designating the "Dr. Paul H. Everett
7 Building" as described in subsection (1).
8 Section 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
9 law.
