  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to referenda on taxation;

  3         prohibiting the holding of a referendum on

  4         taxation at any election other than a general

  5         election; providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law

10  to the contrary, any referendum that proposes to initiate a

11  new tax, increase the rate of an existing tax, or remove an

12  existing exemption from a tax is prohibited from being

13  submitted to a vote of the electors at any election other than

14  a general election.

15         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1997.
