2 An act relating to firefighter and forestry
3 firefighter training and certification programs
4 (RAB); amending s. 633.35, F.S.; providing for
5 the issuance of a special certificate for
6 administrative and command heads; providing
7 guidelines for certain reexaminations;
8 providing an effective date.

10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12 Section 1. Subsection (3) of section 633.35 is
13 amended, present subsections (4) and (5) of that section are
14 renumbered as subsections (5) and (6), respectively, and a new
15 subsection (4) is added to that section, to read:
16 633.35 Firefighter and forestry firefighter training
17 and certification program.--
18 (3) The division may issue a certificate to any person
19 who has received basic employment training for firefighters in
20 another state when the division has determined that such
21 training was at least equivalent to that required by the
22 division for approved firefighter education and training
23 programs in this state and when such person has satisfactorily
24 complied with all other requirements of this section part. The
25 division may also issue a special certificate to a person who
26 is otherwise qualified under this section and who is employed
27 as the administrative and command head of a
28 fire/rescue/emergency services organization, based on the
29 acknowledgment that such person is less likely to need
30 physical dexterity and more likely to need advanced knowledge
31 of firefighting and supervisory skills. The certificate is

1 valid only while the person is serving in a position as an
2 administrative and command head of a fire/rescue/emergency
3 service organization.
4 (4) A person who fails an examination given under this
5 section may retake the examination once within 6 months after
6 the original examination date. An applicant who does not
7 retake the examination within such time must take the Minimum
8 Standards Course, pursuant to s. 633.35(1), before being
9 reexamined. The division may establish reasonable
10 preregistration deadlines for such reexaminations.
11 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1998.
