  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the University of

  3         Florida Gator football team for its first

  4         national championship and for its 1996 football

  5         season.

  7         WHEREAS, the University of Florida Gator football team

  8  captured the university's first national championship with a

  9  number one ranking in the Associated Press and the USA

10  Today-CNN coaches' poll, and

11         WHEREAS, the Gators won the 1997 Nokia Sugar Bowl Game

12  in a decisive victory over arch rival FSU, defeating the

13  Seminoles 52-20, and

14         WHEREAS, the 52 points scored by the Gators in the

15  Sugar Bowl are the most points ever scored in one game in

16  Sugar Bowl history, and

17         WHEREAS, the Gator football team won the University's

18  fourth straight SEC title, becoming only the second team in

19  conference history to do so, and

20         WHEREAS, the Gators were ranked number one for eleven

21  weeks of the regular football season, longer than any

22  University of Florida football team in the school's history,

23  and

24         WHEREAS, the 1996 Gator team and the 1995 Gator team

25  are the only teams in the University's history with a twelve

26  win season, and

27         WHEREAS, the 1996 Gator football team is the only team

28  in the nation to win at least twelve games in each of the last

29  two seasons, and

30         WHEREAS, the 1996 Gators are the second team in school

31  history to post a perfect 9-0 SEC conference record, and

  1         WHEREAS, this year's Gator team stretched the

  2  University of Florida's unbeaten mark in the SEC to twenty-two

  3  games, the third longest streak in conference history, and

  4         WHEREAS, with this year's ranking, the University of

  5  Florida remains one of only two football teams in the nation

  6  to finish in the Top Ten in each of the last six years, NOW,

  7  THEREFORE,

  9  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

10  Florida:

12         That the University of Florida Gator football team,

13  Head Coach Steve Spurrier, and the coaching staff are

14  commended for their outstanding accomplishments in bringing

15  the University of Florida to national prominence and

16  excellence in intercollegiate football.

17         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

18  with the Seal of the House of Representatives affixed, be

19  presented to the University of Florida Gator football team and

20  to Coach Steve Spurrier as a tangible token of the sentiments

21  of the Florida House of Representatives.
