  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the New York Yankees of

  3         Major League Baseball for winning the 1996

  4         World Series and for their contributions to the

  5         State of Florida.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball

  8  are owned by George Steinbrenner, a productive and valued

  9  resident of the City of Tampa, Florida, and

10         WHEREAS, the Yankees team conducts its annual spring

11  training in the City of Tampa, and

12         WHEREAS, the presence of the Yankees organization in

13  the City of Tampa provides an economic boost not only to the

14  city but also to the entire Tampa Bay area, and

15         WHEREAS, members of the Yankees team that either live

16  in or are from the Tampa Bay area include players Wade Boggs,

17  Dwight Gooden, Derek Jeter, Jimmy Key, Pat Kelly, Jim Leyritz,

18  and Tino Martinez and Coach Don Zimmer, and

19         WHEREAS, the Yankees had an outstanding 1996 season

20  that was capped by winning the American League Eastern

21  Division title, then the American League pennant, and

22  ultimately the 1996 World Series, and

23         WHEREAS, Joe Torre did an extraordinary job of managing

24  the team through its amazing 1996 season, his first with the

25  team and his first, after a long and stellar career as a

26  manager with other Major League teams, that ended with the

27  winning of a World Series, and

28         WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of the Florida

29  House of Representatives commend an organization that produces

30  so much to benefit the State of Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball are

  5  hereby commended for winning the 1996 World Series.

  6         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that owner George Steinbrenner,

  7  Manager Joe Torre, all Yankee coaches and players, and the

  8  entire Yankees organization are further commended not only for

  9  their distinguished accomplishments on behalf of Major League

10  Baseball but also for their many contributions on behalf of

11  the City of Tampa, the Tampa Bay area, and the State of

12  Florida.
