Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9055 By Representatives Morse, Logan, Cosgrove, Roberts-Burke, Rojas, Villalobos, Heyman, Barreiro, Bloom, Meek, Geller, Valdes, Rodriguez-Chomat, Garcia, Lacasa, Horan, Bush, Bullard, Betancourt and Diaz de la Portilla 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing March 25th and 26th as 3 "Dade County Days" in Tallahassee. 4 5 WHEREAS, in 1836, the Florida Legislative Council 6 created Dade County, naming it after Major Francis Langhorn 7 Dade, who had recently been killed by Seminole Indians, and 8 WHEREAS, by 1896, Henry Flagler had extended his 9 railroad south to Miami and built the Royal Palm Hotel at the 10 mouth of the Miami River, and the City of Miami was 11 incorporated with 368 voters, and 12 WHEREAS, in 1957, the voters of Dade County approved 13 the Home Rule Charter, which allowed the formation of a form 14 of government for Dade County as it exists today, and 15 WHEREAS, Dade County encompasses more than 2,000 square 16 miles and currently has a population that exceeds 2 million, 17 and 18 WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes Dade County for its 19 history of cultural richness and diversity and for its 20 contribution to the state's economy, NOW, THEREFORE, 21 22 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 23 Florida: 24 25 That March 25th and 26th are recognized as "Dade County 26 Days." 27 28 29 30 31 1
