  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution declaring 1997 as the

  3         International Year of the Reef.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, in order to draw attention to the

  6  deterioration of the world's reefs, governments and

  7  environmental groups around the world have declared 1997 as

  8  the International Year of the Reef, and

  9         WHEREAS, the coastal communities of the State of

10  Florida and particularly the Florida Keys are the home of some

11  of the world's most precious coral reefs, and

12         WHEREAS, the importance of coral reefs has been

13  exemplified by the creation of the Florida Keys National

14  Marine Sanctuary, and

15         WHEREAS, coral reefs are an important part of the

16  marine ecosystem upon which this state is so dependent, and

17         WHEREAS, as part of a fragile coral reef ecosystem, the

18  coral reefs off the coast of the Florida Keys require clear,

19  clean, nutrient-free water in order to survive, and

20         WHEREAS, the International Year of the Reef will serve

21  not only to emphasize the importance of reefs to this state,

22  but also to educate the citizens of the world on the dangers

23  which are confronting our natural reefs, NOW, THEREFORE,

25  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

26  Florida:

28         That the Florida House of Representatives joins in

29  declaring 1997 as the International Year of the Reef.
