2 A resolution designating June 1997 as Prostate
3 Cancer Awareness Month.

5 WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most common type of
6 cancer among men in the United States and in Florida, and the
7 second leading cause of cancer deaths among men, and
8 WHEREAS, an estimated 334,500 men in the United States
9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 1997, and 25,400
10 of them will be citizens of Florida, and
11 WHEREAS, an estimated 41,800 men in the United States
12 will die from prostate cancer in 1997, and 3,200 of them will
13 be citizens of Florida, and
14 WHEREAS, non-Caucasian men in Florida have a 50-percent
15 higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer than do
16 Caucasian men, and
17 WHEREAS, non-Caucasian men in Florida who have prostate
18 cancer are more than twice as likely to die of the disease
19 than are Caucasian men, and
20 WHEREAS, June 10-17 has been designated by the United
21 States Congress as National Men's Health Week, NOW, THEREFORE,

23 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
24 Florida:

26 That the Florida House of Representatives hereby
27 declares June 1997 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in
28 Florida and urges all men to become aware of the risks and
29 symptoms associated with prostate cancer and to be informed
30 about screening tests, methods for early detection, and
31 treatment.

2 programs for high-risk populations be emphasized during the
