1 House Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the City of Punta Gorda
3 Fire Department.

5 WHEREAS, on March 16, 1897, the Mayor and Town Council
6 of the Town of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed Ordinance No. 129,
7 to establish a fire department consisting of a hook and ladder
8 company, a Fire Marshal, and first and second Assistant Fire
9 Marshals, and
10 WHEREAS, the duties of the Fire Marshal included the
11 responsibility for control of all operations at each fire that
12 occurred in town, the care, custody, and control of all fire
13 apparatus, and pricing a set of hooks and ladders and five
14 buckets, and obtaining estimates for the construction of
15 cisterns or reservoirs at the mouth of all streets opening
16 onto to Marion Avenue from the south or southwest from King
17 Street to Cross Street, and
18 WHEREAS, the fire committee obtained the prices of and
19 purchased fire pumps, to be put into said reservoirs, and also
20 contracted for such hose as was useful and necessary for use
21 on said pumps, and
22 WHEREAS, in order to obtain the means to equip and
23 carry out the operations of the fire department a tax of 4
24 mills on the dollar on the state valuation of the property
25 within the corporate limits of the Town of Punta Gorda was
26 levied and collected annually as a special tax for waterworks
27 and fire protection, and
28 WHEREAS, Mayor Bill Richards of Punta Gorda
29 commemorated the event of the Centennial Celebration for the
30 Punta Gorda Fire Department by the presentation of a
31 ceremonial badge to Fire Chief Bill Dryburgh, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
2 Florida:

4 That the House of Representatives of the State of
5 Florida hereby commends the Firefighters of the City of Punta
6 Gorda for their dedication and service to the community of
7 Punta Gorda for the past 100 years.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution
9 be presented to Mr. Bill Dryburgh, Chief of the Punta Gorda
10 Fire Department and the Punta Gorda City Council as a tangible
11 token of the sentiments expressed herein.
