2 A resolution relating to the United Nations
3 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
4 Discrimination Against Women.

6 WHEREAS, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
7 of Discrimination Against women was adopted by the United
8 Nations General Assembly on December 18, 1979, became an
9 international treaty on September 3, 1981, and by 1996, 151
10 nations including all of the industrialized world, except the
11 United States, have agreed to be bound by the Convention's
12 provisions, and
13 WHEREAS, the United States supports and has a position
14 of leadership in the United Nations, and was an active
15 participant in and a signatory to the Convention, and
16 WHEREAS, the spirit of the Convention is rooted in the
17 goals of the United Nations, and the United States, to affirm
18 faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of
19 the human person, and in the equal rights of men and women,
20 and
21 WHEREAS, the Convention provides a comprehensive
22 framework for challenging the various forces that have created
23 and sustained discrimination based on sex against half the
24 world's population, and the nations in support of the present
25 Convention have agreed to follow Convention prescriptions, and
26 WHEREAS although women have made major gains in the
27 struggle for equality in social, business, political, legal,
28 educational, and other fields in this century, there is much
29 yet to be accomplished and through its support, leadership,
30 and prestige, the United States can help create a world where
31 women are no longer discriminated against and have achieved

1 one of the most fundamental of human rights, equality, NOW,
2 THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
5 Florida:

7 That the House of Representatives of the State of
8 Florida strongly supports the United Nations Convention on the
9 Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and
10 hereby pledges its support in the future for the achievement
11 of the Convention's continuing goals.
